Blade Alignment Helper

Test 1 of 6

Straight two-foot glide

Checks whether the skater feels pulled consistently to one side when both skates are weighted evenly.

Instructions

Use a clear, quiet section of ice.
Skate forward slowly, then set both feet hip-width apart.
Glide on two feet with softly bent knees and quiet upper body.
Keep weight balanced between both skates and repeat several times.
Stop immediately if anything feels unsafe.

How it should feel or look

Both skates should glide forward calmly.
The skater should not feel forced onto one edge.
Small wobbles from balance or ice conditions can happen.

How it does feel or look

Feels straight and evenOne skate repeatedly feels as if it wants to pull inward or outwardOne ankle feels forced over an inside or outside edgeI can keep it straight only by twisting my foot, knee, or hipThe pull changes between attemptsI feel generally wobbly on both skates

Test 2 of 6

One-foot glide feel check

Checks whether one skate feels naturally centred during a gentle one-foot glide.

Instructions

Perform only if you can safely glide on one foot.
Start with a slow two-foot glide, then lift one foot slightly.
Glide briefly on the test foot with the knee softly bent over the toes.
Repeat on the other foot and compare sides.
Do not force a long glide.

How it should feel or look

The blade should feel as if it sits under the centre of the foot.
The ankle should not feel forced to collapse inward or outward.
One side should not feel dramatically wrong.

How it does feel or look

Both sides feel reasonably centredOne skate drops strongly to an inside edgeOne skate drops strongly to an outside edgeOne side feels much harder to balance than the otherI can balance only by clenching my toes or twisting my kneeThe result changes from attempt to attemptI am not confident doing this test safely

Test 3 of 6

Forward line / snow trace check

Checks whether the blade appears to travel cleanly or whether one skate leaves an unusual trace or scrape.

Instructions

Use clean ice if available and avoid busy sessions.
Skate slowly forward in a straight line with relaxed knees.
Stop safely before looking back at the marks.
Compare the marks left by each blade and repeat several times.

How it should feel or look

Both skates should glide with similar noise and resistance.
One skate should not feel as if it is dragging sideways.
The trace should not look dramatically different from the other side.

How it does feel or look

Both skates feel and sound similarOne skate leaves a wider scrape or snowier traceOne skate feels like it is skidding sidewaysOne skate chatters or vibratesOne skate feels slow or stickyThe trace changes depending on the attemptThe issue appeared after sharpening, mounting, or a knock

Test 4 of 6

Quiet edge change feel

Checks whether one blade transitions predictably between edges.

Instructions

Use a safe, open section of ice.
Skate forward slowly.
Perform gentle shallow curves or soft slaloms.
Keep the movement small and controlled.
Compare left and right skates.

How it should feel or look

Edge changes should feel smooth and predictable.
The blade should not suddenly grab, skid, or chatter.
One foot should not feel as if it is fighting the other.

How it does feel or look

Edge changes feel predictableOne skate suddenly grabsOne skate suddenly skidsOne skate chatters or vibratesThe blade feels different after a recent sharpeningThe blade feels different after a fall, collision, or knockI cannot perform this safely

Test 5 of 6

Visual and rocking check

Provides a safe off-ice observation that may indicate a blade should be inspected for a bend or twist.

Instructions

Remove the skates from the ice and dry the blade first.
Use a reliable straight edge, such as the edge of a solid table.
Place one side of the blade along the straight edge and press gently at heel and toe.
Repeat on the opposite side of the blade and compare both sides.
As an alternative, place a straight ruler or straight edge along the side of the blade and look for visible light gaps.

How it should feel or look

The side of the blade should sit evenly against the straight edge.
It should not rock noticeably when light pressure is applied at heel and toe.
Both sides should behave similarly.

This is observation only. Do not bend, clamp, lever, or try to straighten a blade.

How it does feel or look

Both sides sit flat with no obvious rockingOne side rocks but the opposite side does notBoth sides rockI can see light between the blade and the straight edgeThe blade looks twisted or unevenI noticed this after a fall, impact, or collisionI am unsure whether my straight edge is reliable

Test 6 of 6

Screw / mounting security observation

Looks for urgent signs that the skate should not be used until checked.

Instructions

Perform this off ice only.
Dry the sole and blade area.
Look for missing screws, raised screw heads, damaged screws, gaps, clicking, or visible sole damage.
Do not test screws by turning them or add replacement screws.
If anything looks loose or damaged, stop using the skate and consult a technician.

How it should feel or look

Screws should be present and seated correctly.
The blade plate should sit flush to the sole.
There should be no obvious movement, cracking, or damaged holes.

Blade mounting needs the correct pilot-hole width and depth, approved screws from the skate manufacturer, and correct torque. Leave this work to an experienced skate technician.

How it does feel or look

Everything looks seated and secureA screw is missingA screw looks loose, raised, tilted, damaged, or corrodedThere is a gap between the blade plate and soleA screw turns in the hole without securing properlyThe sole looks cracked, soft, swollen, or damagedThe blade shifted recently or makes a clicking sound
